All Star - District / Provincial Dates & Information

2024  District / Provincial / National Competition Dates
Minor, Major, Junior, Senior

All players with hopes of playing on an all star team (minor to senior) must plan ahead to ensure they are available for the tryouts as well as key competition dates.   See the tryout page for tryout dates and team forming details.

Final dates for districts will be posted on our website in June.   The below chart provides the planned locations and expected dates.   Please note that start and end dates can easily vary by a day or two depending on the number of leagues entering a team and due to rain during the competition.  Teams can expect to play games on any day of the week in the date range, including weekdays or weekends.

Parents have responsibility for costs for travel, accommodation and meals related to Provincial competition. D6 subsidizes the cost of gas for travel to locations at a distance from Ottawa ie: Toronto, Windsor.  Flights are provided for players and coaches when Thunder Bay hosts.  Travel to National competitions are paid for by LL Canada.

Tournament Play
"Tournament Play" is a term used by Little League to describe the District, Provincial, National and International series of games which start in July.  We refer to these teams as  the "All-Star team".  The Ontario LL site gives a good explanation about how tournament play works. www.llontario.ca

South Ottawa traditionally enters teams in Minor, Major, Junior and Senior playdowns - subject to player and coaching availability.   Players must attend tryouts and must verify their availability for district, provincial and national competition dates.

Tryouts take place in early June, sometimes late May.  Please put the dates in your calendar - anyone wanting a spot on a team must be assessed and is expected to attend.

District competition against our fellow D6 teams begins in early to
mid-July.  Provincials happen in mid-July followed by Nationals in August. Seniors start and finish earlier --- districts begin during the last week of June with provincials in early July and nationals mid-July

Exact tournament start dates are only known after leagues commit to sending teams, the deadline for which is the end of May.  Tournament formats (ie: round-robin/double elimination) also depend on the number of teams.  Players trying out for the tournament team who are date sensitive should discuss with the coaching staff or league convenor.

The successful team then moves on to compete at the provincial level which involves traveling to the Ontario host city.   While the district contributes toward the cost of player and coach transportation to cities that are at a distance from Ottawa (Toronto, Windsor, Thunder Bay area), parents should be aware that much of the cost of attending provincial and national competition falls to them, primarily for accommodation and food.

Major, Intermediate, Junior and Senior teams will continue on to the Canadians (National level) should they win Provincials.  The path for the Major Division ultimately leads to the Little League World Series in Williamsport in August. Junior and Senior divisions ultimately lead to a World Series competition in the USA.  Minor teams do not have play beyond provincials.

Tournament Play Results

In 2012 the SOLL Minor Blues were successful in their district tournament and earned their way to Windsor to compete in the Provincials. In the end, the High Park Braves earned the Provincial title but it's hard to imagine that any other team had as much fun as The Blues. In 2013, our Minor, Junior and Senior teams played in the Provincial Championships held in Kemptville (Minor), Kanata (Junior) and Ottawa (Senior). The Seniors went on to represent Ontario in National competition held in Thunder Bay.  In 2014, we won at Minor, Major and Senior levels where the teams traveled to provincial competitions in Nepean, Windsor and Oakville respectively.  All three teams made it through round-robin play and lost in the semifinals. In 2015, our Minor and Major teams earned spots in Provincial competition. Our Junior team made it to the district finals but did not succeed in their efforts to compete at provincials.  We did not field a senior tournament team.  In 2016 we fielded teams in Minor, Major, and Senior.  The Majors defeated Orleans in district competition and made it to the semi-finals in Provincial play in Thunder Bay. In 2017 we fielded teams in Minor, Major, and Senior.  The Minor and Major teams won districts and competed in Provincial competition - the Major team beat High Park in the semifinals but went down to defeat in the finals against the Port Arthur team. This is the closest our majors have come to the provincial championship in many years.  In 2018, we hosted the Junior Provincials - our team also won at districts so was both the host and the D6 representative. The team competed well, losing in the semis to East Nepean who went on to beat Oakville in the final game.  We also fielded teams at Minor and Major, but for the first time not at Senior.

In 2019 our Major and Junior teams won in Districts against formidable Orleans teams.  At Provincials the Blues made it to the finals in a dramatic semi-final win against the East Nepean Eagles, however went on to concede the Ontario title to Oakville.  The Majors had a great showing in Kingston, losing in semis to our friends in Ottawa West who went on to beat High Park in the finals and then travel to Ancaster to compete in the Canadian Championships.  We also fielded a Minor team, but again did not have a Senior team.

2020 and 2021 saw tournament play at all levels cancelled due to covid, as it was unsafe for players to travel far enough to make the competition possible.  In 2022, our teams were victorious at Junior and Senior.  Both put forward excellent efforts at provincials, but did not continue beyond that point.  We did not form a Minor team for various reasons which is considered a one-time occurance.  We did field a Major team.

2023: Our senior and minor teams won in district competition travelling to Pembroke and Timmins respectively to compete in Provincials.  The minor team was successful in getting to the semis, losing a close one to Ottawa West.  We also fielded junor and major teams in district play.
