Rookie (co-ed)
2025 ROOKIE INFORMATION
*** Rookie spring ball starts on Wednesday May 7 at 6pm for all divisions and teams. Everyone will start their season with a practice on this day. Team shirts and hats will be handed out as well. Rosters as well as specific diamonds for your child's team will be posted on the website as soon as available, however the general information is below. If time permits you may hear from your coach before kick off day, but if not you'll meet the coaches that evening.
If bad weather forces cancellation, you will hear from the league by 5pm by email. If you do not receive an email, you are to assume the session is a go and proceed to the field.
Coaches and Volunteers:
If you've offered to be involved with your child's team, rest assured you have a job - it takes a village and we need all of you. Coaches will hear from the league as soon as we have finalized rosters which takes a least two weeks after sort outs. We will be hosting a zoom call on Friday May 2 for coaches in order to provide information and answer questions so that everyone is ready to hit the field. In the meantime, there are coaching clinics offered at the district level which have been communicated to all coaches registered in the database - if you can attend please do. And please read the rules document !! It's on the website under "docs/rules/policies".
If you've signed up to help with field preparation, scorekeeping or managing the team, please identify yourself to the coaches at the first session. Your contribution is significant and appreciated by coaches - they should be spending time with players not raking the field and sending emails.
Info you need to know:
There is a lot of information and resources on our website, such as equipment you must supply for your child / equipment provided by the league / rules documents etc.
In particular, please read the details about bats if you are considering a purchase - all bats used in practice and games MUST be ones approved by Little League standards - that information is included on the site. Under no circumstance can unapproved bats be used - coaches / league reps are required to remove them. We suggest that parents considering a purchase NOT do so until they are sure of the details and sure of the size / weight appropriate to the player. The league provides bats so there is no need to purchase a bat.
General Program Information
Rookie - league ages 6,7,8
Rookie players will be divided into three groups based on spring sort outs - Canadian, National & Provincial Divisions.
Canadian division -- all sessions at Canterbury 1 and 2 diamonds 2185 Arch Street. Higher skilled players, primarily 8 year olds. Pitching machine.
National division - all sessions at either Sharel (1900 Florida Ave) or Playfair (1801 Playfair Drive) diamonds
Primarily 7 year olds - some 6/8 year olds. Coach pitch with tee.
Provincial division - all sessions at Arch School (2129 Arch Street). The Main diamond is closest to the arena. Diamond 1 is the furthest east. Primarily 6 year olds. Tee transitioning to coach pitch.
Two outings per week on Mondays and Wednesdays - 5:45 warm up; 6:00pm practice starts followed by game.
At the beginning of the season the schedule has a higher proportion of practices than games. The first week or two will be skill practice only, especially at the provincial level. After that the format moves to 45 mins skills development followed by a 45 minute game.
Please take a moment to READ THE RULES document which is found on our site under policies/documents.
If a friend request is of great importance to your child, we consider requests only on a reciprocal basis. Please read the policy so you know all the details - it's posted under policies on the home page. Requests must be received PRIOR to sort outs.
A sort out session will be held in mid April - check for details on the website under spring programs. And we will communicate a specific arrival time to all registrants. This session is for the purpose of dividing players into the appropriate groups, and to balance teams. We have MANY children playing baseball for the first time at this level (and all levels), so there is no need for any child to be nervous about signing up or about attending the sort out session.
Game scores and individual team standings are recorded and there will be playoffs however learning and having fun is the focus, not winning. Every team makes the playoff round and every player receives a trophy.
