Girls' Participation in Sports Rising in Canada
2024-11-19New report shows that while girls in Canada are increasingly enjoying the benefits of participating in sport, there is still room for improving the experience
The new report, released by Canadian Women & Sport on Monday, November 18, is based on a study of 5,000 Canadians that was undertaken in partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and IMI Consulting. Among its conclusions:
- 63% of girls play organized sports on a weekly basis
- By age 16, that figure falls to 50%
- Girls from lower-income households are less likely to participate in sports
- 7 in 10 girls are keen to engage in women’s sports as fans
The report concludes with recommendations to sports organizations for:
-
increased investment in girls' sports;
-
implementing girl-centred coaching practices;
-
the creation of safe, supportive environments where all girls feel welcome.
